For over a decade, Betty Kagoro has advocated for children’s rights, maternal health and reproductive health rights, all while providing HIV/AIDS outreach to local communities. First as a freelance reporter and then as an editorial manager, Ms Kagoro developed strategic communications in order to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and to promote the rights of local women and youth. With the same passion for promoting positive social change, Ms. Kagoro currently manages the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda’s (IRCU) HIV prevention projects in collaboration with 16 community and faith-based organizations. To ensure that the prevention programs are effective and relevant, one of IRCU’s biggest challenges, Ms. Kagoro provides partner organizations with capacity building trainings, technical support and monitoring and evaluation assistance.
IRCU is a coalition formed in 2001 that unites five of Uganda’s largest religious organizations in their efforts to address Uganda’s most pressing development challenges, including HIV/AIDS. IRCU serves local communities through its coordinated network of faith-based health units. These health units are integral to the health and wellbeing of Ugandan communities. In fact, USAID estimates that the health units affiliated with IRCU currently offer over 40 percent of healthcare services in Uganda. In addition to developing health policy, the IRCU trains volunteers to facilitate the provision of HIV/AIDS care and provide support for anti-retroviral treatment.
